About this deal

Face serums and face masks (the skincare kind) have had their moments in the sun, so we're declaring 2022 'The Year of the Moisturizer.' From tried-and-true classics to new releases that promise to be the elixir of youth, face moisturizers make up a huge portion of the beauty market. But with so many different options out there, we had to know, once and for all: Who makes the best face moisturizer (and where can we buy it immediately)? So, we called in the experts — a dermatologist and a cosmetic scientist — to find out everything there is to know about choosing the right one.

Though the cream wasn’t as fast-absorbing as some of our other favorites, it didn’t take long to soak in. And it felt lightweight, comfortable, and easy to wear. Given its non-greasy texture, the moisturizer is great for various skin types, like dry, combination, and sensitive skin. And if you have oily skin, Versed recommends using the rich lotion as a night cream—not an everyday moisturizer. To find a face moisturizer that won’t clog your pores, look for something with non-comedogenic ingredients. Our experts specifically recommend ingredients like hyaluronic acid, ceramides, glycerin, and squalane, because they moisturize skin without clogging pores. They also recommend avoiding comedogenic (pore-clogging) ingredients, like coconut oil, cocoa butter, and lanolin. If you’re especially prone to clogged pores, you may also want a moisturizer made with comedolytic (pore-clearing) ingredients, like salicylic acid. We love that the formula includes the mineral sunscreen titanium dioxide, which provides broad spectrum SPF 50 protection. And you don’t have to worry about a white cast since the formula is tinted with iron oxides. La Roche-Posay has excellent sun protection products protecting against UVA rays and UVB. The La Roche-Posay Anthelios line is my favorite facial sun-care product.Because the moisturizer is so rich, we wouldn’t recommend it for oily skin. But it’s great for other skin types, like dry and combination skin. The 1.68-ounce moisturizer feels a little bit expensive. But since it does the work of three products, it’s easy to justify the buy.

Though La Roche-Posay is still a best recommendation for all skin types, there are products from CeraVe that might be best suitable for others. There are products from these two brands that I love the most, and let’s start with CeraVe. La Roche-Posay and CeraVe only produce mineral sunscreens. Mineral sunscreens are made with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that create a physical barrier to UV rays. Chemical sunscreens are La Roche-Posay absorbed into the skin. To simplify your search for a great face moisturizer, we put 64 face moisturizers to the test in The Verywell Testing Lab and at home. We tested 29 moisturizers for oily skin and 35 moisturizers for dry skin. And we divided our testers into two teams based on skin type: 18 tested the moisturizers for oily skin, while 21 tested the moisturizers for dry skin.Though the moisturizer is made for acne-prone skin, it’s also great for oily and combination skin. We also love that it’s fragrance-free and appreciate the budget-friendly price. I noticed on CeraVe’s formulation or ingredients that their products contain essential ingredients of ceramides and cholesterol. These are slowly released over time to skin’s protective barrier function. It contains ceramides, which help retain moisture and protect the skin’s natural barrier. Niacinamide is also present to soothe and repair the skin. La Roche-Posay offers dermatologist-recommended skincare solutions - even for those with the most sensitive skin. La Roche-Posay offers ranges that are specifically tailored for allergic, sensitive, blemish-prone and aging skin, as well as providing expert sun protection. The range also offers products suitable for delicate baby skin. The four most common skin types are normal, dry, oily, and combination. Normal skin feels balanced, dry skin can get tight and flaky, oily skin can get greasy and shiny, and combination skin often gets oily in the T-zone (along the forehead and nose). Finding the right moisturizer for your skin type and lifestyle may take some trial and error, says dermatologist Gloria Lin, MD-FAAD. But the dermatologists we spoke to generally recommend heavier creams for dry skin, oil-free moisturizers for oily skin, and combination products for combination skin.
